St. Louis Basement Window Replacement

Drafts, water stains, rust, and stuck basement sashes usually point to a failing opening. For many Greater St. Louis homeowners, the most reliable fix comes through basement window replacement.

At STL Windows and Doors, we replace outdated basement windows with energy-efficient windows from ProVia, installed by our in-house team for a clean finish and long-term value.

Drafty, Leaky Basement Windows Replacement in St. Louis – Without the Guesswork

old basement window

Old basement windows fail in predictable ways: the frame loosens, caulk breaks down, and outside air starts moving through joints you cannot always see. Not only does the outside elements start to come in, but so do the outside critters if it’s bad enough.

That is why we focus on complete replacement instead of patchwork repairs when the opening, sash, or seal has already lost integrity. We install ProVia ENERGY STAR®-certified basement windows built to seal tightly and perform well in St. Louis conditions.

Properly fitted energy-efficient windows can improve comfort, reduce nuisance moisture, and support home value.

With a 10-year workmanship guarantee, turn to STL Windows & Doors for basement window replacement.

Common Basement Window Problems

Here are the key issues we regularly see:

  • Water intrusion around the frame: Moisture entering at the perimeter can lead to rot, mold, and structural damage.
  • Failed or deteriorating caulk lines: When caulking no longer bonds to masonry, it creates gaps that accelerate both air leakage and water entry.
  • Shifting or weakened window openings: The integrity of the opening is just as important as the window itself. New windows can’t perform properly if the surrounding structure is compromised.
  • Condensation and fogging between panes: Often a sign of seal failure, leading to reduced energy efficiency and visibility issues.
  • Musty odors and poor air quality: Typically caused by excess moisture, poor sealing, or inadequate ventilation.
  • Security concerns from failing locks or warped sashes: Windows that don’t close or lock properly can become easy access points.
  • Pest intrusion through gaps and openings: Small openings around frames or sashes can allow insects and rodents to enter the home.

Basement Window Options We Install (And When Each One Makes Sense)

We focus on ProVia basement window solutions that balance ventilation, security, and long-term sealing. Our recommendation depends on the opening size, foundation type, and whether the basement is unfinished utility space, storage, or part of a finished basement living area.

If you are comparing styles, start with function before appearance. A basement used every day may need airflow and easy operation, while a storage area may benefit more from a fixed unit with fewer moving parts.

Option Best for Why it’s a good fit Tradeoffs
Hopper window Everyday ventilation Tight seal, energy efficient, and a common fit for St. Louis basements Smaller clear opening than larger styles
Sliding basement window Wider openings Simple operation with good horizontal airflow Tracks require routine cleaning to stay smooth
Fixed basement window Maximum seal No moving parts, excellent for energy efficiency and security No ventilation
Casement window (egress) Basement bedrooms / code compliance Opens fully outward for maximum clear opening, making it ideal for egress requirements Requires adequate exterior clearance and may increase project scope

Our Top Basement Window Recommendations

While there are technically many different window styles you can use in a basement, the top styles we recommend are hopper, slider, and casement.

Hopper Windows

Aspect Hopper Window

Hopper windows are one of the most common choices for basements because they open inward from the top, creating a tight seal when closed. They’re ideal for ventilation in smaller openings while helping keep out water, debris, and drafts.

Sliding Windows

Slider windows

Sliding windows work well for wider openings and provide simple, reliable operation. They allow for good horizontal airflow and are a practical option when you want more ventilation without increasing the window height.

Casement Windows

Casement windows

Casement windows are often recommended for basement bedrooms because they open fully outward, creating a larger clear opening. This makes them a strong choice for egress situations where safety and code compliance are required.

I got many quotes and when STL windows and doors came to give me a quote and explain the description of the job to be done, the clean up process, and the detail to be completed it was a no brainer. Peyton and Max installed 21 new windows and a new front door. They were a pleasure to work with, especially since we had other home improvement projects going at the same time. They did meticulous work and answered all of our questions.

I used Stl windows and doors to replace half of the windows in my house and a sliding door. The whole process was excellent. From talking with Dan, the sale manager to the installers (Tony and his crew ) to Scheduling with Chris at the office. First of all, Chris was able to up my schedule date a week early upon my request. I'm sure he squeezed me in his tight schedule. I was very thankful. Tony and his crew were very professional, yet friendly and considerate. They were prompt on time the 3 days they came and very efficient. They took down my window treatments and put them back up again exactly the way they were. They moved furniture and put back. They took the time to explain how the windows opened from top to bottom as the windows had many options that my old windows didn't have. I would use them again and would definitely recommend them to my family and friends

Worth the wait! Price was insanely different from other bids for a single window replacement. Paid cash for a slightly better rate. Originally was going to need to wait 8 months for replacement but I got lucky & they fit me in at the 4 month marker since they had a cancellation. Customer service from Kaleb & Tony was outstanding. Both were very personable & made me feel confident that the job was being done well. Great warranty! Glad to check this off my list:)

STL Windows and Doors did an excellent job with our window replacement project. We live in an older home (over 100 years old) and we know there are going to be issues related to its age. The STL Windows and Doors team worked extremely hard with us to replace one of our bathroom windows that had begun to show signs of water damage. After the initial window replacement project was finished, we did communicate with their team about concerns we had with the original window frame that remained. Chelsea worked with us and a team (Tony and Caleb) came to our house within a week and replaced the frame as well. Their prices were reasonable and they had an array of choices. Overall, we highly recommend them for any window-related project you may have!

Experience was great, STL W+D replaced our old rear door and transom with a new eight-foot unit. It’s great to have this huge pane of glass looking out over the back yard. Installers were great and clean and shimmied the door in without removing our old casing and messing with the plaster. They know what they are doing!

Peyton and Max were knowledgeable, professional, and completed the installation beautifully and efficiently. Both of them did a great job with making in the new window secure, sealed, and attractive.

Premium products and service at a more affordable price. Fantastic experience at every step of the process. Had some hail and tornado damage. Jared (sales) was friendly and knowledgeable about the industry. Did not hard sell, but instead provided a balanced and very detailed explanation of STL's products and services vs competitors, which felt trustworthy. Dan (owner) came out to measure the windows. My spouse said he was friendly and answered her questions. We got an unexpected scheduling break and installed much sooner than the expected wait. The installers, Peyton and Max, were friendly, efficient, and conscientious of our home. Their finish work (sealing and caulking) is better than the original for the house. They took the time to demonstrate all the features of the new windows and how to care for them. We all noticed a defect in the glazing inside one of the window sashes, which they immediately reported to the owner who, in turn, called me immediately about the manufacturer's quick replacement. Provia warrantees the vinyl, glass, hardware and screen of the window for life and this guarantee is transferable once to a new home owner. The installation has a 10-year guarantee. Also, STL has another business for window cleaning and screen replacement, which we're going to check out.

FAQs About basement Windows

Here are some of the top questions we receive about basement windows. Have other questions? Give us a call.

Technically, yes, you can replace a basement window yourself if you have the right tools, experience, and knowledge of proper window installation. However, basement windows can be tricky because they often sit in concrete, masonry, or older foundation openings that are not perfectly square.

A poor fit can lead to water leaks, drafts, pest entry, security concerns, and long-term moisture problems. Unless you are experienced with measuring, sealing, flashing, and installing windows in basement openings, it is usually better to call a professional basement window replacement company like STL Windows and Doors.

Common basement window problems include water leaks, rotting frames, broken glass, rusted metal frames, poor insulation, difficult operation, drafts, condensation, and pest intrusion. In many older St. Louis homes, basement windows may also be undersized, outdated, or installed in uneven foundation openings.

Because basement windows sit close to the ground, they are more exposed to moisture, soil, temperature changes, and debris. Replacing old basement windows can help improve comfort, energy efficiency, security, ventilation, and moisture protection.

The best replacement basement window depends on the size of the opening, how the room is used, ventilation needs, security concerns, and whether the window must meet egress requirements. For many basement applications, hopper windows, sliding windows, and casement windows are popular choices because they provide practical ventilation and work well in smaller openings.

You should also consider frame material, glass efficiency, locking hardware, ease of operation, and moisture resistance. A professional installer can measure the opening, explain your options, and help you choose a basement window that fits properly and performs well in your home.

The average cost to replace a basement window ranges from a couple hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars. The price varies significantly depending on the window size, style, frame material, glass package, condition of the existing opening, and installation requirements. Simple basement window replacements are usually more affordable than larger specialty windows, but costs can increase if the opening needs repair, resizing, or additional sealing work.

The best way to get an accurate price is to schedule an in-home estimate.

Yes, basement windows are often different from regular windows because they are usually smaller, installed closer to ground level, and placed in foundation or masonry openings. They also need to handle moisture exposure, limited space, security concerns, and sometimes egress requirements.

While they use many of the same materials and glass options as other replacement windows, basement windows require careful installation to prevent leaks, drafts, and fit issues. Choosing the right basement window and having it professionally installed can make a major difference in performance, comfort, and long-term durability.
